SCH4U is five units that behave like five different courses, and most students do not struggle with all of them. They struggle with one. Equilibrium, or organic nomenclature, or the energetics unit where the math suddenly matters. We start by finding which unit actually broke, then rebuild it with a tutor who scored 90+ in SCH4U specifically.
SCH4U is a listed requirement for most Ontario life science, health science, pharmacy and engineering programs, which means the mark is read closely rather than averaged away. It also arrives in the same semester students are assembling their applications, so there is very little slack in the schedule.
The course is also unusually front-loaded on abstraction. Organic chemistry asks students to hold three-dimensional structures in their head, and the equilibrium unit asks them to reason about a system rather than compute a single answer. Those are teachable skills, but they are rarely taught slowly enough in a semestered class of thirty.

It is a genuine step up, mostly because it asks for reasoning about systems rather than single calculations. Students who did well in SCH3U on careful work alone often find SCH4U needs a different approach, which is usually what we end up teaching.
